Summary: This collection of seven evening poems is complemented by a CD that plays the tunes of these and five other lyrical pieces. This is a board book collection of poems for bedtime with a CD.
Type of Reading: Bedtime story, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 0 to 4; read yourself: 5 to 8
Interest Level: 0 to 5
Age of Child: Started reading with 5-year-old child.
Little Kid Reaction: Our child quickly recognized many of the poems and sang several of the songs (even without the CD). S/He particularly liked finding the shiny starts on the pages.
Big Kid Reaction: This is a delightful board book that we would have loved to have when our child was an infant/toddler. The selection is perfect and the illustrations are just captivating. It is still fun to share, as those days aren't all that long ago, and the presentation is such that this will be nice to re-introduce during first grade when s/he is learning to read.
Pros: This is a sturdy board book that will take lots of wear-and-tear and be useful for a very long time. You can enjoy the book without the CD and enjoy the CD without the book.
Cons: None.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. In fact, buy two. This is a truly wonderful gift for new parents or parents-to-be.
Educational Themes: This is a book just for enjoying. Kids may learn that quiet music helps lull them to sleep, but you can never guarantee that.
Notes: This is a Mom's Choice Award submission for 2006.
Literary Categories: Fiction - picture book, poetry, poems for bedtime
