Little Kid Reaction: By the time we got to page three, our child had figured out who the best friend was, and then s/he was done. S/He sat politely through the rest of the book, but when asked another time, wasn't interested in reading it again.
Big Kid Reaction: The story is a series of vignettes, in part, celebrating the every-day things that make a parent-child relationship special. We kept hoping there was a little more to the story ... like I can talk to Dad when I have a problem.
Pros: The repetition and rhyming scheme of the book are great for new readers. Sons may enjoy reading this book with their dads.
Cons: Dad "lets" his son wash the car with a candy bar reward? That doesn't sound like friendship.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. If you have a new reader in the house, you may find this a good book for practicing vocabulary. If you're looking for a good my-daddy-and-me book, there are stronger titles out there.
Educational Themes: This is a book about a father-son relationship. It is a nice starting point to talk about your own memories or make plans to create new ones.
