Summary: Rosa and Abby are friends. Abby has freckles, and Rosa thinks they make her look beautiful. Whether it is in art class or playing outside, Rosa tries and tries to have her freckles, just like her friends. But it is no use. What she learns, though, is that Abby loves her glasses! This is a bilingual picture book that celebrates one's unique traits. It is a companion book to a bilingual book about glasses.

Little Kid Reaction: Our daughter likes this book and always insists that it be read with the companion title I Wish I Had Freckles like Abby. Rosa and Abby are seen as friends; and we have been "meeting" them every night for a week now.
Big Kid Reaction: Although the books make great monographs, it is fun to read the stories together. They are excellent complements to each other, and the girls' creativity is fun.
Pros: This bilingual story about friendship and admiration offers kids a chance to reflect on themselves, too. You can easily choose to read the story in English, Spanish, or both.
Cons: You must be comfortable reading Spanish. Although it offers some "beginner" vocabulary, the content is such that you will want to be comfortable with your pronunciation.
Borrow or Buy: Buy both books. They are companions and are great friends for your young child. The vocabulary lists and some of the idioms are handy if you are working with a seocnd language.
Educational Themes: This is a classic story about friends wanting to be just like the other. It can be enjoyed just as it is, or it can be an introduction to talking about what you like about your friends (beyond looks!), making the most of your own assets, and self esteem.
