Title: POLAR SLUMBER - SUENO POLAR

Author: Dennis Rockhill

Illustrator: Dennis Rockhill

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Raven Tree Press, LLC, ©2004

Material: hard cover

Summary: Can snow be warm? Can you cuddle with polar bears? Sure, the magic of snowy dreams makes everything possible. This wordless bedtime story has suggestions about how to share the book in Spanish. and English.

Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, read aloud book

Recommended Age: read together: 1 to 6; read yourself: 5 to 8

Interest Level: 1 to 6

Age of Child: Shared with 6-year-old girl.

Little Kid Reaction: Our daughter enjoyed pointing out the animals on the pages and at the end, closed her eyes as though she were asleep, too. We've read this several times.

Big Kid Reaction: The illustrations are wonderful and truly carry the book. Despite pages with snowflakes and ice, very warm and comforting. We started this book anticipating rhyming text. Although the text is fine, it seems stilted. The lyrical song of a rhyme would really make this book a standout. Unfortunately, we do not speak Spanish fluently enough to converse about the book in a language other than English.

Pros: The illustrations and quiet text create the 'hush' of a new-fallen snow that is perfect for bedtime reading.

Cons: None, really. Because this is a wordless book, it is very easy to create a story in Spanish ... you will need to be fairly fluent, though.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a nice book, but you will probably only read it a couple of times.

If You Liked This Book, Try: BUENAS NOCHES, LUNA (Good Night, Moon) , BURRO'S TORTILLAS , EL HIPOPOTAMO AMARILLO (Pequenos Gigantes)

Educational Themes: This is strictly a bedtime story. The illustrations are quite exquisite and you can have fun looking at the unique snowflakes and identifying animals.

Notes: This title is also available in an English-only version Polar Slumber

Literary Categories: Fiction - poetry, picture book, foreign language, bilingual book, fantasy, Spanish
