Title: WHAT A DAY IT WAS AT SCHOOL!

Author: Jack Prelutsky

Illustrator: Doug Cushman

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Greenwillow Books, an Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers,

Material: hard cover

Summary: Pick a topic related to school, and you'll find a poem about it here. Whether you're in pre-K or high school, these cats have tales to tell about their day ... from math to history, from your backpack to lunch in the cafeteria. This is a collection of poems in a picture-book format.

Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, read aloud book, middle grade reader

Recommended Age: 5 to 10

Age of Child: Read with 4½-year-old child.

Little Kid Reaction: Although our kindergartner hasn't encountered all of the activities described in the poems, s/he is familiar enough with school and its paraphernalia (like backpacks) to enjoy the humor. S/He especially liked watching the animal students.

Big Kid Reaction: What a fun read. There is plenty to enjoy (or reminisce) about being in school when we were young.

Pros: The poems are humorous and light, guaranteeing a smile if not a laugh with each one. The pictures are vibrant, too, making it a great sibling read when there are students of multiple ages at home.

Cons: None.

Borrow or Buy: Buy. This is a fun read all year 'round, but will be particularly memorable as a back-to-school classic.

If You Liked This Book, Try: MARVIN MONSTER'S BIG DATE , FROGGY GOES TO SCHOOL , BOOMER TO THE RESCUE

Educational Themes: Although there isn't much to "teach" from the book, it does create an opportunity to encourage kids to write poems about everyday things and events.

Notes: There is an audio-book version, too.

Literary Categories: fiction - picture book, poetry, humor, animal stories
