Summary: Winter is here and it's time for snow. A young snowflake wonders out loud about the journey to earth.
This is a seasonal picture book.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, read aloud book, middle grade reader
Recommended Age: 2 to 8
Age of Child: started reading to 4 1/2 year old child
Little Kid Reaction: We couldn't turn the pages fast enough. When we asked our preschooler what s/he liked best, the answer was "it's purple."
Big Kid Reaction: The illustrations are just beautiful; soft colors help create the quiet hush we always sense with the first snow of the year.
Pros: The story is simple, allowing curiosity to move with each page, as well as chances to invite kids to add their own feelings and create an ending all their own.
Cons: None, really.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. The seasonal nature and the simplicity of its telling limit the long-term value of the book.
Educational Themes: The theme is seasonal: what happens in winter. You can use the story as a prelude to going out in the snow (or enjoying cocoa AFTER the snow), or as an introduction to poetry or creative writing.
