Summary: Mother Bird leaves her egg to search for food; baby bird hatches and goes on a search to find his Mother. A story that offers a simple adventure, an opportunity to identify common animals and a reminder that we all have a Mother who loves us.

Age of Child: Started reading with a child 3 months old.
Little Kid Reaction: A frequent request at nap time. S/He loves to "plop" out of the tree when baby bird begins his search, as well as talking in the animal voices. Now that we recognize the animals, s/he "reads" it independently.
Big Kid Reaction: An easy read that bears the weight of REPEATED readings. It's fun to engage the little one (now 20 months) in reciting the lines and responding for the various characters. The pictures are simple enough that you could easily create a couple versions of the tale.
Pros: The story is simple and you can use your "animal voice" to be a kitten, dog, or cow. It's as interactive as you want it to be.
Cons: This could become a tiring read if you don't let the little voices chime in.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. It is a classic for a reason, and you'll be reading it a lot. It will also come in handy as an easy reader later.
Educational Themes: This is a good book for re-assuring children that we all have a mom who is looking out for us... even when she isn't with us every moment of the day.
