Summary: Murphy (a dog) is the Emcee for this collection of unique songs about caring for and remembering your manners around dogs. This is a songbook that offers advice for pet owners and pet lovers alike.
Type of Reading: family reading, read aloud book, interactive reading
Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 10; read yourself: 7 to 10
Interest Level: 3 to 8
Age of Child: started reading at 3½ years old
Little Kid Reaction: At first our preschooler didn't like the first song, but loved the rest of the CD. Now s/he can't get enough of the music … and is singing about "strange dogs" wherever we go.
Big Kid Reaction: A great book for young kids who love dogs…and their parents who live in fear of their child getting bit! Our preschooler will approach every animal s/he sees … now she'll sing one of the songs when she sees a dog. They say everything you need to say to young animal lovers about safety and pet owners about care. It'll be great wisdom when s/he's ready to own her own pet!
Pros: The tunes have varied beats (all rhyming) and are likely to get the safety message across better than Mom and Dad's droning reminders. The care cards in the back are a nice complement.
Cons: None.
Borrow or Buy: Buy! If you have a dog (and young pet owners) or if you have a young dog lover or pet owner wanna be!
Educational Themes: Although the theme is dogs, you can "generalize" a number of the themes to talk about animal or pet safety in general (e.g., feeding wild animals, approaching unknown/stray pets, etc.)
Notes: This book comes with an audio CD.
Literary Categories: Fiction - music and dance, safety, animal stories
