Summary: What do polar bears, emperor penguins, roadrunners, camels, bacteria known as thermophiles, and tripod fish have in common? Along with a number of other creatures discussed in this book, they can survive in some very harsh and unfriendly environments. From volcanoes to the bottom of the sea and from the South Pole to the Sahara Desert, the author takes you to a number of "extreme" places to meet some very remarkable critters. This is a nonfiction picture book that introduces kids to unusual habitats and animals.

Little Kid Reaction: My friend's son looked at the book and found it very interesting.
Big Kid Reaction: I thought the information the book contained was excellent but I was not impressed with the cartoon like illustrations!
Pros: Kids who like "extremes" will not be disappointed. There is lots of good material on how some animals are able to survive in very inhospitable environments.
Cons: None except for the sophomoric illustrations.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow first. If my child showed an interest in reading it more than once, I would buy this book.
Educational Themes: There are themes of natural history, animal habitat, and animal species (which you can contrast and compare), as well as geography.
