Summary: Stellaluna is a brown bat that is separated from her mother at birth. She is raised in a nest with other birds. Ultimately she recognizes that she's not a bird and has to learn to accept that being different is Okay. This is a picture book about self-discovery.

Little Kid Reaction: When we first tried to read the story, we didn't get much interest. It's now a year later, and s/he'll pull this one from the shelf as one of the regular bedtime books.

Big Kid Reaction: We like the story ... and the fact that it's not your usual animal character. There's plenty to learn, too. We're still not sure what took so long to garner interest.

Pros: The story is positive, moves quickly, and its message is easily absorbed by preschoolers.

Cons: None.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow, at least. The story has several layers that your kids can grab onto and enjoy.
