Little Kid Reaction: Our child likes this book. It isn't one s/he pulls off the shelf every night, but she enjoys picking out the things that make her You-nique.
Big Kid Reaction: We started reading this with our child when s/he started preschool. Now, two years later, we still read it periodically. The story is a nice pick-me-up on days when things get frustrating.
Pros: This is a positive, fun way to help kids see themselves as special. The illustrations are bright and cheerful and complement the text perfectly.
Cons: None.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow, at least. This book has great long-term potential. As your child becomes a more sophisticated listener (moving beyond simple recitation), it will be fun to engage him/her in talking about how they see themselves.
Educational Themes: This is a book with lots of long-term potential. With pre-readers you can identify objects (like balloons, colors, body parts) or feelings. As kids grow, there will be opportunities to share a little of themselves: naming the things they like/don't like; family members they resemble; listing their own attributes.
