Title: A MOTHER'S PROMISE

Author: Lisa Humphrey

Illustrator: David Danioth

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Illumination Arts Publishing Company, 2003

Material: hard cover

Summary: For each of our children, we dream big dreams and offer deep hopes. In this story, a greater being speaks for each of us in explaining these thoughts. This is a book that conveys in poetry and image the dreams a parent has for a child.

Type of Reading: family reading, bedtime story

Recommended Age: all ages

Age of Child: Started reading with child nearly 3 years old.

Little Kid Reaction: Our toddler regularly pulls this from the shelf. S/He doesn't want it read, s/he only wants to turn the pages (slowly) and look at the pictures.

Big Kid Reaction: This is a beautifully illustrated book. The few times we've succeeded in reading it together, it is quite nice. We're hopeful that we'll get a turn to read it again some day.

Pros: The themes are universal, whether you are a biological or an adoptive parent.

Cons: None. Although there is an intimation of Mother Nature as the narrator, it really speaks for men and women.

Borrow or Buy: Buy. This is a must-have for your child's collection. It would be a wonderful gift from a birthparent, as well.

If You Liked This Book, Try: WISHES FOR YOU , THE DAY WE MET YOU , I'LL BE THERE

Educational Themes: In reading this book, our children can absorb the ideas of hope and big dreams.

Literary Categories: fiction - family, adoption, poetry
