Notice what attracts your children's attention, even if they only look at the pictures. Then build on that interest; ... More
Summary: This novelty kit contains a 64-page book about the Revolutionary War and some war memorabilia, such as maps, badges, coins, reproductions of soldiers' letters, and other materials. Children can look at the War in context of specific themes as well as chronologically. This is a nonfiction product that allows for reading and hands-on learning.
Type of Reading: family reading, anytime reading, independent reading, interactive reading
Recommended Age: read together: 9 to 13; read yourself: 10 and up
Interest Level: 9 and up
Age of Child: Enjoyed by a 9-year-old boy.
Little Kid Reaction: My neighbor's child loved all the goodies in the box.
Big Kid Reaction: Everything about this kit is excellent. The booklet that comes with the kit is filled with solid information and the interactive pieces are also well done.
Pros: Bring history to life with this book/activity combo. Kinesthetic learners (students who need to touch things) will find this engaging and helpful for learning history.
Cons: The only problem is that there is a potential choking hazard because of some of the small interactive parts. Keep this away from small children.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. This is an excellent resource. I doubt a library will carry it because of all the "parts."
Educational Themes: Kids can explore the personalities and events of US colonial history. With maps, replica historical documents, and "personal letters" there are opportunities to do a lot more than just memorize dates.
