Summary: Welcome to South Carolina’s Low Country. It is August 1943, and the nation is reeling: we're still recovering from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor; dealing with the Polio epidemic; and afraid of German submarine attacks along the eastern seaboard. Hugh, his sister Sally, and cousin Tom were too young to join the services but they certainly did their part protect and serve their community. This is an historical fiction novel that introduces today's audiences to life during World War II.

Big Kid Reaction: This is a superb offering ... definitely a 10 out of 10! This is a great story that will excite and educate the readers. Although the stories are fictional, the author has crafted them and the characters so well that the reader feels entirely engaged. This may be Elise Weston's first novel, but it is an outstanding debut. I am anxiously awaiting her next work.
Pros: It is a superbly written piece of historical fiction that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Educational Themes: The story, though fictional, captures the impact of Pearl Harbor, the fear of invasion along the Atlantic seaboard, and the concern that the spread of the Polio epidemic were having on American communities everywhere. This story takes place in South Carolina low country and demonstrates the level of patriotism that permeated our country.
