Summary: Did you know, that witches used to walk on tiptoe? When it came to spooking and spells, they wanted to have the element of surprise. Poor Druscilla, though, was anything but sneaky. She tried everything she could think of: a donkey spell, a wheelbarrow, even flying with bird feathers didn't work. Was there anything that could help? This is a picture book story that tells the legend of witches riding brooms.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, read aloud book, elementary reader
Recommended Age: read together: 4 to 8; read yourself: 8 to 10
Interest Level: 3 to 8
Reading Level: 4.5
Age of Child: Read by a 7-year-old girl. Also read with a 5-year-old girl.
Little Kid Reaction: 7YO: Our daughter thumbed through this book and looked at the pages in random order for a couple days before she picked it up. She kept wanting to go back to the page where the witches gulped potions that grew extra warts. Then she read it ... and laughed and wanted to read us pages. 5YO: She liked that the witch had squeaky knees and could not surprise people. She also liked that the witch tried new things in her effort to be quiet. We read it a couple of times.
Big Kid Reaction: Mom 1: This is clever and cute. The dark colors set the Halloween tone, but Druscilla is a cute witch and the pratfalls also keep the story light. This is destined to be a holiday favorite. Mom 2: I enjoyed the story. I thought the pictures where a little dark. It helped with the mood of the book as it was about witches but it was hard to read at times. I thought my daughter would enjoy it more but she said it was not real and she did not believe the story.
Pros: Kids will enjoy the humor in this seasonal story about a persevering witch.
Cons: None.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. Mom 1: This is a cute story and you're likely to read it several years running. This is a perfect book for the school or public library. Mom 2: I don’t think I would buy the book but reading it from a library might be okay.
