Summary: Poppy is Penelope's grandfather. Poppy always wears khaki pants. One day, when he has a hole in the knee, he asks Penelope to fix it. She immediately goes off in search of a needle and thread, but realizes that she doesn't know Poppy's favorite color. Poppy is color-blind, so he can't help Penelope. She quickly decides on a color, but then is stumped again. This is a big hole. She gets frustrated, but then has an idea. Will it work? This is a picture book story that has themes of learning colors, problem solving, and family.

Little Kid Reaction: Our daughter wanted to read this book, but the unusual capitalization threw her off, so she asked us to read it. She immediately got into the story and loved the doll characters. She also liked reading all of the names of the colors that Poppy pulled from the drawer. "Aw, this is so cute."
Big Kid Reaction: This is a cute story and the combination of the dolls set in illustrated backgrounds is fun. I thought this book would be too young for our daughter, but she really liked the story and what she learned about sewing.
Pros: Bright colors and expressive doll characters will capture the hearts of little girls and grandfathers alike.
Cons: None.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. This is a cute book and it would make a nice gift. Girls who are close to their grandfathers will cling to the book long after they are "interested" in reading it.
Educational Themes: This is a clever way of talking about colors and problem solving. Young children who don't know what being color blind can also learn something new about how people see color.
