Summary: It's bedtime, and Gabby and Leon are doing everything they can NOT to go to sleep. It's not because they aren't tired, it's because they're afraid of monsters. Mom and Dad are prepared. All the help Gabby and Leon need is in the monster protection box. As soon as they were tucked into bed, Rollo popped out of the box. He promised to sweeten their dreams and keep monsters away. This is a cartoon-styled bedtime story for kids who are afraid of monsters in the dark.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, anytime reading, family reading, read aloud book, early reader
Recommended Age: read together: 2 to 5; read yourself: 7 to 8
Interest Level: 2 to 7
Reading Level: 1.9
Age of Child: Read with and by a 7-year-old girl.
Little Kid Reaction: What got our daughter interested in the book was a little stuffed Rollo. What kept her attention was the story. We read this together, then she read and re-read this book every night for a week. She is not afraid of monsters, but she loved the idea of someone helping her have even happier dreams.
Big Kid Reaction: When we saw the cartoon characters, we were a little skeptical. Then we were surprised. The story is clever and offers an easy "tool" for parents to recreate. There are a couple of awkward spots and it's not always easy to follow the order of the dialogue clouds, but overall it is fun to read. This would have been a nice book to have when our daughter was younger and afraid of the dark.
Pros: Humor, an adorable character, and bright colors help kids overcome their fears of monsters and the dark.
Cons: None.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow or buy. This one could go either way. It is a fun story to share, but if you have a child with serious night time fears, you might want this book around a lot.
Educational Themes: This is a bedtime story to help kids overcome their fear of monsters. The "Monster Protection Box" is a device you can create together or parents can "find" and use at home.
Literary Categories: Fiction - picture book, rhyming book, bedtime story
