Summary: Come sit on the porch as a lady is singing to her cats. Follow along as more cats join her. The cats may have different colors, but they all like to sing or meow. They cause such a ruckus that she has to yell at them to stop yelling and to scat. This easy reader is filled with lots of beautiful pictures and few words.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, playtime reading, learning to read, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 6; read yourself: 5 to 8
Interest Level: 2 to 7
Age of Child: Read with a 2-year-old boy.
Little Kid Reaction: I picked this book because of the different cat pictures. My son liked looking at the different cats and trying to copy their singing. He also laughed when the lady got upset at the cats and shooed them away. After we were finished reading, he would periodically find the book and sit to look at it by himself.
Big Kid Reaction: The pictures were wonderful and are filled with vibrant colors. Reading was very simple. There were just a few words, which makes it easy to read with a two year old, and easy for a 5-year-old to read themselves.
Pros: This lightly narrated book offers fun for pre-readers and emerging readers alike.
Cons: None.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is an enjoyable book, and it will work for several age levels, but your kids will outgrow it. You're likely to find it in your school or public library.
Educational Themes: Explore colors, animal noises, and enjoy like/different games with preschoolers and toddlers. The words are repeated often enough that the kids will feel like they are "reading" the book. Early readers will also benefit from the vocabulary repetition.
