Summary: Explore the life cycle of butterflies, birds, and eels that live on the same coastal farm. The author shows how they spend their summer on his property and then migrate to some very different and distant places in the fall.

Age of Child: Read with a class of 8 and 9 year-olds.
Little Kid Reaction: We read this with a small mixed group of youngsters, and the reaction matched. Boys and girls who were into nature found it interesting; the rest were ambivalent.
Big Kid Reaction: I thought the mix of bird, butterfly, and eel was unusual. I also really liked the map the author provided to show where the creatures actually migrated.I would give the author very high marks on the factual material he provided in the text and in the book's concluding section.
Pros: This is an excellent book to get a class or child interested in migratory habits of animals, birds and other critters.
Cons: None.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. I would borrow this book for home use. That said, every school library should purchase a copy.
Educational Themes: There are several layers to this book. You can explore nature and migration for each of the animal species; you can contrast/compare insects and mammals; and you can learn to read maps.
