Summary: Little Mortimer Mouse misses spring. While sitting quietly eating his sunflower seeds, he notices there are people planting seeds. He decides to take his last sunflower seed and plant it in hopes of it growing and giving him more seeds to eat. He waters it and weeds it until finally, with God’s help, it grows. Once the sunflower is fully grown he saves all the seeds he can and then decides he has so much that he will share them with new friends. This picture book offers a story of faith and generosity.

Little Kid Reaction: My daughter liked the title and the cover picture, so she picked this book. She liked the book, but said she could not be as patient as Mortimer was being. She would have wanted to pull out the flower or give up long before he did.
Big Kid Reaction: I enjoyed the simplicity of the book. It is really all about the mouse and the seed that grows. I liked that the mouse gave praise to God for helping the seed grow into a sunflower. I could tell my daughter was enjoying it because she was very interested in what was going to happen on the next page.
Pros: This is a story that not only explains how flowers grow, but mixes in faith, perseverance, and a cute mouse, too.
Cons: None.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a nice story that you'll read several times, but it isn't one that you'll keep forever.
Educational Themes: Enjoy this book for the basic story: learning how a flower grows; or expand it to talk about faith, generosity, sharing, and perseverance.
