Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, learning to read, read aloud book, remedial reader

Recommended Age: read together: 5 to 8; read yourself: 8 to 10

Interest Level: 5 to 9

Reading Level: 1.5

Age of Child: Read with a 5-year-old girl.

Little Kid Reaction: My daughter enjoyed how the two characters interacted with each other. She liked the different activities they did together. She also liked that they were helping each other without realizing the other was doing something special for them.

Big Kid Reaction: I enjoyed the message of friendship, as well as how they each did something nice for the other without expecting anything in return. I wasn’t sure she would like the book as it was just about two animals and what they did. I was pleasantly surprised when she wanted me to keep reading to see what adventure they entered next.

Pros: New readers will enjoy this story that is similar to several other easy reader friends, including Frog and Toad.

Cons: None.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is nice set of stories, well worth the read. Kids who like Frog and Toad and Little Bear books will enjoy this as well.

If You Liked This Book, Try: HOUNDSLEY AND CATINA AND THE QUIET TIME , A BIRTHDAY PRESENT FOR MAMA (Step into Reading Series, a Step 2 Book) , LIZZY AND SKUNK

Educational Themes: This is a book for emergent to transitional readers (Grades 1 and 2). The stories move more smoothly than some early readers, and there is enough suspense to keep readers moving. You can explore the themes of friendship, caring, and selflessness.

Notes: Flesch Kincaid reading level 1.5

Literary Categories: Fiction - animal stories, adventure, easy reader, series book
