Summary: Stinky lives in a cave with his pet toad Wartbelly and all his smelly things: pickled onions, pickled eggs, pickled bananas. He loves his animal neighbors and the swamp. He doesn't like people, especially kids. So when Nick builds a tree-house, Stinky pulls every trick he knows to get him to leave. Will it work? This is a three-chapter graphic novel for emerging readers.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, read aloud book, learning to read, reluctant reader
Recommended Age: read together: 4 to 8; read yourself: 6 to 9
Interest Level: 5 to 9
Reading Level: 1.2
Age of Child: Read by a 7-year-old girl.
Little Kid Reaction: Our daughter likes this book. We have read it to her, we've read it together, and she has read it herself. She particularly likes adding the sound effects that go with some of the panels.
Big Kid Reaction: We like Toon Books, but this is not one of the stronger stories. There are teaching moments you can draw out, and everything turns out fine, but it didn't grab us as much as several of the others.
Pros: With cute monsters, pranks, and lots of action this graphic novel will engage emerging and reluctant readers alike.
Cons: The cover shows Stinky up in a tree with a water bomb. This may mislead some browsers, because there are no physical or harmful events in the story.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a story that can build a reader's confidence, but after they have read it a couple of times, they'll be ready for something new.
Educational Themes: This is a book that will engage readers, particularly those expanding their sight words. There are themes of mistrust and misunderstanding, friendship, making new friends, change, stealing, prank, feelings, being sorry, and being different.
