Title: KITTEN'S FIRST FULL MOON

Author: Kevin Henkes

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: HarperCollins Children's Books, ©2004

Material: hard cover

Summary: A young kitten sitting on the porch discovers a bowl of milk in the sky (the full moon). She tries everything she can to reach it. This book plays to a toddler's innate curiousity about touching things just because they can see them.

Type of Reading: anytime

Recommended Age: read together: 2 to 6; read yourself: 5 to 8

Interest Level: 2 to 4

Age of Child: Started reading at nearly 2˝ years old.

Little Kid Reaction: This was an immediate hit. S/he wants to read it at least twice at every nap and at bedtime. She especially likes touching the moon and spitting out the bug. Even after it went back to the library, we had requests.

Big Kid Reaction: This is a sweet, simple story. The black and white illustrations illuminate the night-time scene and keep the little reader focused on the story and the cat and moon images. We'll probably go buy this one for its potential for early reading.

Pros: It's a fast read. Toddlers can grasp all of the concepts (climbing, reaching, jumping); and the language is simple enough for early readers to read themselves.

Cons: None.

Borrow or Buy: Buy. Even though it's simple and you know the ending, the story doesn't get boring.

If You Liked This Book, Try: HUGS AND KISSES , OLIVER FINDS HIS WAY , BARN CAT: A COUNTING BOOK

Educational Themes: There's plenty with this one. The fun of discovery and exploring; and the importance of trying and trying again…even if you don't succeed.

Literary Categories: Fiction - animal stories, picture book
