Little Kid Reaction: My son liked the cute cat and pointed out the familiar objects. We read this together, but he also picked it up to flip through the pages on his own.
Big Kid Reaction: I liked the book, but then I didn't. The pictures in this book are vibrant and clear. I like any alphabet book, but we both lost interest in Cleo by the end. I didn't like the fact that the text doesn't explicitly name the object. For example, "A is crunchy and red," but there is no "apple. "
Pros: Colorful pages and cute characters will attract young children. This is an interesting book for initial letter recognition.
Cons: Although this is a great book for reading to young children, I would avoid sharing it with beginning readers.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. Only because board books, when well loved, wear out. This is not the greatest literature, but the colors attract young minds and they will like handling a book that's just the right size for them.
Educational Themes: This is a book to help kids with letter recognition and sounds. It also helps with textural descriptions of objects so that kids engage other senses and can build their sensory vocabulary (e.g., crunchy, cold, sweet, red).
