“Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.” ... More
Summary: This is a lift-the-flap book. Animals snuggle and play, and readers lift the flap to see two toddlers doing the same thing. This board book series uses flaps and simple language to engage toddlers in sharing a book.
Type of Reading: family reading, anytime reading, playtime reading, read aloud book, interactive reading
Recommended Age: read together: 0 to 3; read yourself: 4 to 6
Interest Level: 0 to 4
Age of Child: Read with 2-year-old boy.
Little Kid Reaction: My son loved lifting the flaps. It is a nice big flap, so it was easy for even the littlest hands to manipulate. He also identified the animals as we read.
Big Kid Reaction: This is an easy to read, colorful book. The illustrations are fun and thre is a wide variety of skin colors and handicaps.
Pros: Bright colors, sturdy construction, and full-page lift the flaps make this a fun book to share or to let toddlers "read" themselves.
Cons: This is a great series, but the books are best shared one at a time. I wouldn't recommend reading more than one at a sitting.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. This is a book that will grow with your toddler up to preschool. It might be a good choice for a preschool program in addition to young toddlers.
Educational Themes: The story has a good moral about how to tread your friends: with respect and love.
Notes: The publisher donated a copy of this book to the Reading Tub, Inc. This is an unsolicited donation.
Literary Categories: Fiction - picture book, animal stories, interactive learning, series book
