Summary: This lift-the-flap book portrays pairs of animals in low-key activities, then shows a pair of toddler friends doing the same thing. This board book series uses flaps and simple language to engage toddlers in sharing a book.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, playtime reading, read aloud book, interactive reading
Recommended Age: read together: 0 to 4; read yourself: 4 to 6
Interest Level: 0 to 4
Age of Child: Read with a 2-year-old boy.
Little Kid Reaction: My son liked lifting the flaps and looking at the animals. He would name the animals and talk about other things in the picture (sun, snow, etc.).
Big Kid Reaction: This is a great bedtime story! The subject matter starts calm and progressively gets even calmer. The sturdy construction is much better than some other lift-the-flap books we've seen.
Pros: The colorful illustrations are fun and engaging. Lifting the flaps makes reading interactive and also helps toddlers learn how to handle a book.
Cons: None.
Borrow or Buy: Buy or borrow. This is a cute bedtime or nap-time book. The sturdy construction will stand up well under toddler readings and handling. I would think about buying this book for a friend or relative.
Educational Themes: The parallel pictures help young children see the similarities and differences between humans and animals, but also among people, too. There are opportunities to explain that playing with friends can also involve calm activities.
Notes: The publisher donated a copy of this book to the Reading Tub, Inc. This is an unsolicited donation.
Literary Categories: Fiction - picture book, animal stories, interactive learning, series book
