Summary: This is a lift-the-flap book. On each page, two animals are playing together. You lift the flap to see two toddlers doing the same thing. Little Kid Reaction: My son loved manipulating the flaps and the animals. We read together several times and he also read it on his own.
Big Kid Reaction: I like that my son could see how children interact in a positive manner. The colorful illustrations and the interactive nature of the book kept my son focused and encouraged him to pick up the book on his own.
Pros: Colorful illustrations, flaps, and animals get kids involved in reading. The diversity of animals and kids with different skin colors and disabilities also add to the depth of the book.
Cons: This is not a series where you read more than one book at a sitting.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. These are great books. They may not be classics but most board books show wear after 1 or 2 kids, and these are sturdy. The themes will also continue to grow with them for several years.
Educational Themes: Even though the audience is toddlers and preschoolers, you can help them understand relationships, tolerance, and (implied) acceptance of children who are different from you. The images model good "friend" behavior using animals and kids.
