Summary: Mandy and her panda friend play lots of different sports together: basketball, gymnastics, and football. The text is simple and written in English and Chinese characters (with the English phonetics for pronunciation). This is a bilingual board book in English and Chinese. It comes with a CD.
Type of Reading: family reading, anytime reading, playtime reading, read aloud book, interactive reading
Recommended Age: read together: 0 to 4; read yourself: 4 to 8
Interest Level: 1 to 4
Age of Child: Read with 2-year-old and 4-year-old boys.
Little Kid Reaction: Both of my sons enjoyed this book because they love sports. We shared it a couple of times and they also picked up the books to flip through the pages and talk about the sports by themselves.
Big Kid Reaction: This was a so-so book. We didn't attempt the Chinese words, but I liked that my boys were enthusiastic about reading it. There isn't much of a "story" per se.
Pros: This is a book about sports that is thematically appropriate for toddlers interested in sports.
Cons: Although the illustrations are cute, they are not superb.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. Toddlers and preschoolers who like sports will find this a nice book to look at.
Educational Themes: This book series is designed to introduce children to Chinese and teach them the language. That said, because it is a bilingual book, you can read just the English and talk about the subject (sports). A CD offers the opportunity to introduce children to the sound of the language.
Notes: The publisher donated a copy of this book to the Reading Tub, Inc. This is an unsolicited donation.
Literary Categories: Fiction - picture book, foreign language, Chinese, series book
