Little Kid Reaction: We read this several times. Our child quickly picked up on the facts and by the third reading could tell us specific details about Emperor penguins. S/He would repeatedly return to the part where mothers threw up their food to feed their young.
Big Kid Reaction: Very clever.Barrington (a stuffed animal) is adorable. The photographs are outstanding and clever, too. Barrington's narration give us lots of details about life in an Emperor penguin colony, and based on our child's reaction, in a format that is easy for them to process.
Pros: This clever picture book has two things kids love: a teddy bear and penguins. The story is packed with factual information and the photographs are beautiful, clever, and educational.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow, at least. This is a good story with lots of great photographs and facts about penguins. It is a must-have for the elementary school library.
Educational Themes: This photo-illustrated story is packed with details about the Emperor penguin and life in an Emperor penguin colony. You'll also find a glossary and fact sheet at the end. The illustration with Barrington's trip also helps kids understand geography.
