Summary: Jimmy gets a bag of oranges. He claims them for himself, but ends up giving them to his parents and friends, one at a time. He has given them all away, and he realizes that sharing them to make them happy is more rewarding than keeping them to himself. This is a story that demonstrates the rewards of sharing.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, anytime reading, family reading, playtime reading, read aloud book, learning to read
Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 8; read yourself: 6 to 9
Interest Level: 3 to 8
Reading Level: 1.7
Age of Child: Read with 3-year-old boy.
Little Kid Reaction: Our child liked identifying the characters by name. The colorful pencil drawings and faces gave him something to relate to. He wanted to read this book again right away and picked it up later, too.
Big Kid Reaction: The feelings and needs of the characters are simple and well written. I LOVED the message: generosity is contagious. Even though Jimmy gives away all his oranges, his friends and family each give him back a section of their orange.
Pros: This picture book has an excellent message; an accessible plot; and fun, colorful illustrations.
Cons: None!
Borrow or Buy: Buy! The book offers a well-written story that kids will relate to (it is about eating!).
