Summary: Over the course of one day, many insects greet a newborn cricket. Yet, every time he tries to return their greeting, he is silent. At the end of the day he meets a cricket, and at last he can speak. This is a book for sharing the sounds of nature. Although the cricket is silent throughout most of the book, at the end you can hear the cricket's chirp.

Little Kid Reaction: S/He loved the chirping cricket and would often jump to the end of the book. More recently, she's settled in to reading along, repeating the greetings of the various insects.
Big Kid Reaction: This is an easy read, and the chirping at the end is a nice closure. The fact that the story traverses the day, from morning to dusk is nice, as is the collection of not-so-routine insects you see in other books.
Pros: It's a sturdy board book, and the last page can certainly take toddler wear-and-tear.
Cons: None.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. You won't find this one in the library. If you're an Eric Carle fan, this is a must have for the collection.
