Summary: This is a colorful presentation of the silly things you want to avoid: shopping for shoes with a centipede, playing Double Dutch with a grasshopper, and definitely don't hold hands with a lobster! This is a read-aloud picture book for preschoolers and young elementary students.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, anytime reading, playtime reading, early reader book, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 8; read yourself: 6 to 9
Interest Level: 3 to 6
Age of Child: Class of preschool students.
Little Kid Reaction: I have a friend who teaches preschool. This is a class favorite.
Big Kid Reaction: I love the whimsical illustrations, especially the fold-out giraffe. When you have finished the book, it is fun to explore other things you and your child (or grandchild) won't want to do like take a mouse to a cheese factory or swim in a vat of molasses.
Pros: Great artwork and a clever selection of creatures entertain children and adults alike.
Cons: If the child is too young s/he may not get the "joke." For example, the idea that you "never go to the bank with a raccoon" may be a tad too subtle, even with the illustration.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. This is potentially a "classic" that even older children will want to hang on to and page through occasionally.
Educational Themes: This is a great way to help you raise the issue of other, more serious things you don't want your child to do, like getting into a car with a stranger or forgetting to look both ways when crossing the street.
