Title: WE ARE GIRLS WHO LOVE TO RUN / SOMOS CHICAS y A NOSOTRAS NOS ENCANTA CORRER

Author: Brianna K. Grant

Illustrator: Nicholas A. Wright

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Balanced Steps, LLC, ©2008

Material: hard cover

Summary: This is a story told in first person. A young girl and her friends take turns talking about their love of running and the benefits it gives them: friendship, positive attitude, good health, success, and inner peace. This is a bilingual book that celebrates the joys of running.

Type of Reading: bedtime story, anytime reading, family reading, independent reading, early reader

Recommended Age: read together: 5 to 9; read yourself: 8 to 12

Interest Level: 6 to 10

Reading Level: 3.7

Age of Child: Read by an 10-year-old girl. She participated in a youth ministry project at Effort Baptist Church helping our Use Your ABCs project.

Little Kid Reaction: I picked the book because I like running, but I didn't like it after I read it. I like exciting books and this wasn't exciting.

Big Kid Reaction: This wasn't what I expected. From the cover, it looked like the story of a group of girls who are runners. It isn't a story, but a series of affirmations about the benefits that come with running. The watercolor illustrations are nice and add give the visual of companionship that the text lacks.

Pros: Beautiful illustrations and positive words show girls how exercise can have lots of benefits.

Cons: Girls who already run will find this boring; girls who don't run are not likely to be enticed when they see the images of races and finish lines. It would have helped if the author had included "how to get started" information in the back.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This can be a helpful book for talking about youth health.

If You Liked This Book, Try: PLAYERS IN PIGTAILS , DIAMONDS ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND: Singled Out in Center Field (Book 1) , LAY-UPS AND LONG SHOTS; An Anthology of Short Stories

Educational Themes: The book emphasizes specific benefits that come from exercise and healthy choices. The theme in general is good for discussions about health and self-esteem; and the specific benefits would be good starter topics about the different ways to achieve those goals.

Notes: Flesch Kincaid reading level 3.7

Literary Categories: Fiction - picture book, exercise, health, foreign language, Spanish
