Little Kid Reaction: Achoo! Ironically, we received this book at about the same time our child's cold was starting. S/He loved playing Katie's part and "practicing" her sneezes.
Big Kid Reaction: Dr. Cowan has done a great job wrapping factual information and reminders (like sneeze into your sleeve) in a story that kids will enjoy. I even learned some new things in the Conquering the Common Cold Guide for Parents that is in the back.
Pros: There is something for everyone in this picture book about dealing with the common cold.
Cons: None.
Borrow or Buy: Buy! The pull-out card in the back keeps you from having to remember how to deal with colds, and the story is a comforting one for kids.
Educational Themes: The obvious theme is about recognizing the symptoms and dealing with the common cold. There are also other elements to the story: Katie's positive memories about her experience visiting the doctor; that your health is more important than a competition; and that colds don't keep you down for long.
