Title: WHEN I WAS LITTLE: A Four-Year-Old's Memoir of Her Youth

Author: Jamie Lee Curtis

Illustrator: Laura Cornell

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers, ©1993

Material: hard cover

Summary: A Four-Year-Old girl talks about all her 'big girl' things as she contrasts all of the things she did as a baby with everything she likes/does now. A fun story for little girls who want affirmation that they're Big Girls, now.

Type of Reading: any time

Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 6; read yourself: 7 to 9

Interest Level: 3 to 8

Reading Level: 2.6

Age of Child: started reading at 18 months

Little Kid Reaction: Initially, the bright, semi-abstract illustrations caught her eye. Now at 2+ years, we like to point out all our 'big girl' activities, too.

Big Kid Reaction: The story, told from a child's perspective, has all of the fun and innocence we would expect from a preschooler describing her life.

Pros: Easy to read, bright, engaging illustrations, complete with subtleties to give Mom and Dad a chuckle, too.

Cons: We read a hard-cover edition. At 18 months we'd grab pages, not just point. It's wear-and-tear threshold is good, but not perfect.

Borrow or Buy: Buy. It's a fun story that toddlers and preschoolers will want to read over and over. It's the story of their life.

If You Liked This Book, Try: IF YOU GIVE A PIG A PANCAKE , FIVE LITTLE MONKEYS WITH NOTHING TO DO , OLIVIA SAVES THE CIRCUS

Educational Themes: It's a nice memory tool, as you can extract events from the story and tell your child what she was like as an infant.

Literary Categories: fiction - adventure, picture book
