Little Kid Reaction: Before we read the book, we played the CD...over and over and over again both in the car and at home. Our child loved the music (especially the tunes to the boogie and rap-beats). The book became a 'secondary' tool for helping visualize the lyrics. Our 9-year-old reviewer read the book to their cousin (third grade), and it helped them both with their multiplication.
Big Kid Reaction: The songs are fun, and the music is exceptional. The vocals, though, don't match up to the material. Whether our child catches the multiplication piece remains to be seen, but we like the idea of blending math/numbers and music. Very clever.
Pros: This collection of poems/songs makes math sound fun. The illustrations are clever and add visual cues to the multiplication lessons. The rhymes and how you can make a song to learn how to multiply.
Cons: Be careful in the car! The "Crime Rhyme Rap" has sirens that sound like they're right outside your window. They can catch you off guard.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow, at least. This is a book that has the potential to be very valuable over time. Kids in Kindergarten are learning to count by 2s, 5s , and 10s ... an early form of multiplication. When the "real thing" gets here, they'll be ready.
Educational Themes: This is a book full of numbers. Whether you want to work with simple counting and estimating or head straight to multiplication, the book with its illustrations and the CD give you two ways to do your math.
