Illustrator: Frances Gilbert

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: BookSurge Publishing,

Material: hard cover

Summary: Not everyone goes to sleep at night. There is a world outside your window that is busy all night long. Through poetic verse, the author introduces readers to a nocturnal world.

Type of Reading: bedtime story, read aloud book, learning to read

Recommended Age: read together: 2 to 6; read yourself: 5 to 8

Interest Level: 2 to 5

Age of Child: Read with child nearly 6 years old.

Young Reader Reaction: Our child liked to match the words on the pages with verse with their counterpart "hidden" in the illustration.

Adult Reader Reaction: The illustrations are beautiful and soothing. Although poetic, it is not the typical "verse" you normally think of for bedtime rhymes. We like that our child could also participate. S/He isn't reading yet, but matching words is a great start.

Pros: This soothing poetry book is excellent quiet-time reading. The author has built in a simple tool to engage the child with reading.

Cons: We tend to like more poetic, rhyming verse.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow. The illustrations are soothing, and the word choice offers opportunities for new readers to practice.
