When some fish laughed at her, she swam away, determined to hide forever. But that hunger ... she needed to eat! When an eel catches her by surprise, octopus learns a valuable lesson. This fictional story draws on real facts about animal life on a coral reef. It comes with a CD-rom.

Recommended Age: read together: 5 to 8; read yourself: 7 to 10
Interest Level: 5 to 8
Age of Child: Started reading with 6-year-old girl.
Young Reader Reaction: Our daughter has asked for this book every night for nearly a week. She finally noticed the CD in the back and was very excited to learn more.
Adult Reader Reaction: This is a cute story. We like that it blends in facts about the animals of the sea. Much more fun to read than a "science book." The "read to me" capability on the CD is wonderful, because our child can move around herself and doesn't need us to read for her.
Pros: Kids will enjoy this colorful story about a shy octopus. Parents will love that it's packed with lots of useful information and learning.
Cons: The puzzles would benefit from having instructions and tags (like "Solve it" read aloud, too. Pre-readers who use other parts of the CD will be stumped by these sections.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. This is a great book to share as a story, and the information will come in very handy when science reports start!
