Author: Berkeley Breathed

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Little, Brown & Company,

Material: hard cover

Summary: This is an adorable takeoff of the children's classic Goodnight Moon, in which Opus' imagination carries him away from the text and into a flight of fancy with a giant purple snorkelwacker, a balloon, and a special bike. Pure fun: for kids who have outgrown Goodnight Moon and whose parents remember Bloom County with fondness.

Type of Reading: bedtime story, read aloud

Recommended Age: read together: 4 to 8; read yourself: 5 to 9

Interest Level: 4 to 8

Age of Child: Started reading with a 4-year-old girl.

Young Reader Reaction: She pays attention to the story but lacks the ability to make connections between the original and this takeoff.

Adult Reader Reaction: Even Grandma gets carried away from the text by the end. Breathed's artwork is excellent and the language is funny and easy.

Pros: Opus is a popular, endearing character for kids.

Cons: You and I remember Opus and Bloom County; your kids have no idea why a penguin is funny in his own right. But they'll soon come around.

Borrow or Buy: Buy. A terrific book that belongs on your shelf.

Educational Themes: None whatsoever. Pure fun.

Notes: Be sure to check out the other children's books by Breathed.

Literary Categories: Fiction - animal characters, picture book series, fantasy
