Summary: Born on a pirate ship, Victricia Malicia is destined to sail the seas. Or is she? She learns all things pirate, but also a lot more. She knows that "Land Ho" is where she wants to go. This rhyming picture book is filled with fun, mishaps, and a happy ending.
Type of Reading: family reading, anytime reading, playtime reading, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 8; read yourself: 7 to 10
Interest Level: 3 to 8
Reading Level: 3.1
Young Reader Reaction: Review pending.
Adult Reader Reaction: It takes a couple readings to fully grasp the rhyming pattern, but it is OH SO WORTH IT. This is a story with humor in words and imagery, and you can't help but love the ending.
Pros: Lots of pirate talk, plenty of humor, and fast-paced rhyme make this a delight for all ages.
Cons: None, really. Though I expect lots of readers want to see the baby with the hook arm and peg leg. [Which you learn later is a prop, and that Victirica was not born that way.]
Borrow or Buy: Buy! This would be a delightful gift for a book-loving girl.
Educational Themes: This is more than a fun read. The message is that you need to be true to who you are. More importantly, that you can do it with grace AND win over the skeptics.
