THE SNOWMAN'S REVENGE

Author: Mark Smythe

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Mark Smyth, 2008

Material: paperback

Summary: The kid built a beautiful, tall snowman. Then left him alone. Unhappy to be outdoors - especially when he saw the kids drinking cocoa - the snowman plans to take revenge and scare the kids. Can the snowman survive in the warm house? This is a rhyming picture book with a humorous look at being a snowman.

Type of Reading: family reading, anytime reading, read aloud book

Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 6; read yourself: 5 to 8

Interest Level: 4 to 7

Young Reader Reaction: Review pending.

Adult Reader Reaction: Anyone who has seen Frosty the Snowman knows how this will end. "Revenge" seems a bit strong a children's book that is designed for a young audience. The illustrations are vivid and the snowman looks pretty menacing. This is not a book I'd read at bedtime.

Pros: Readers who enjoy black humor - and wonder what goes through a snowman's mind - will enjoy this story.

Cons: The snowman's anger is almost palpable. This is not a story that you would read as a bedtime story with kids prone to nightmares.
