Summary: Mouse wants her tail back. Cat bit it off, but refuses to return it unless Mouse brings her milk. When Mouse asks Cow for milk, she wants hay from the farmer. And so it goes, as Mouse travels about town trying to get goods to barter. This little-known Mother Goose poem is told in both English and Chinese. It also comes with an audio CD with the story.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, playtime reading, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 4 to 8; read yourself: 6 to 9
Interest Level: 4 to 7
Reading Level: 2.1
Young Reader Reaction: Review pending.
Adult Reader Reaction: The story has a familiar ring to it, and its style is similar to "The House that Jack Built." The mouse is adorable (like when he is pleading with the farmer for hay or wearing a headband on the jog to the butcher). I also liked how the conversation is incorporated into the illustrations.
Pros: Children will enjoy hearing the story as you tell it, but also listening to the lyrical narrative accompanied by music on the CD.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a cute story you'll likely read a couple of times. The CD helps extend the interest because kids can listen on their own (their is nice background music) and new readers can follow along to practice reading.
Educational Themes: This story is a little known Mother Goose poem. Using the audio CD, readers can follow along and learn many familiar sight words. With older readers, you can talk about poetry, nursery rhymes, and fables.
Notes: The author donated a copy of this book knowing that we would consider it for review and provide an independent, unbiased profile. This book will be given to a nonprofit to help readers in need.
