THANK YOU, PAUL

Author: Charlotte Lundy

Illustrator: Margaret Ray James

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Bay Light Publishing,

Material: hard cover

Summary: Mom and Dad are excited that Alan decided to try out for the Little League baseball team. And he made the team, but he was getting frustrated. His goal was to get a hit, but even with extra practice, he couldn’t make contact with the ball. One day his Mom shared a story about the apostle Paul who struggled so hard to spread God’s word and who, through persistence, finally achieved his goal. The story had a tremendous effect on Alan and his team. This book builds a story that complements the life of Paul, in the Bible.

Type of Reading: family reading, playtime reading, read aloud book

Recommended Age: read together: 5 to 8; read yourself: 8 to 10

Interest Level: 5 to 9

Reading Level: 3.5

Age of Child: Read by an 8-year-old girl.

Young Reader Reaction: My daughter picked this book herself, got about halfway through, and then set it down. She saw the girls in baseball uniforms on the cover, but then saw in the story that they weren't part of the story and she lost interest.

Adult Reader Reaction: The author uses an interesting storytelling device. She has written a believable story and solid characters. The illustrations are terrific. I would expect that 8-10 year-old boys would page through the book many times.

Pros: An excellent motivational story and superb illustrations make this book a valuable teaching resource for parents and teachers.

Cons: None.

Borrow or Buy: Buy. This book gets a buy recommendation for the parent or teacher searching for a wholesome story that will meaningfully engage young readers. It can also be used as a discussion starter in Sunday school class. The simplicity of the narrative, the quality of the illustrations, and the authenticity of the story and characters make this book one to which the readers will frequently return.
