PORRIDGE POETRY (A DOCTOR DOLITTLE'S LIBRARY CLASSIC)

Author: Hugh Lofting

Illustrator: Hugh Lofting

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Doctor Dolittle's Library,

Material: hard cover

Summary: The short poems are whimsical and on a variety of topics from pigs to marriage. The illustrations are simple and engaging. This is a collection of poetry by the creator of Dr. Doolittle.

Type of Reading: family reading; read aloud book; learning to read

Recommended Age: read together: 4 to 8; read yourself: 7 to 10

Interest Level: 4 to 8

Age of Child: Read with 3½- and 4½-year-old children.

Young Reader Reaction: They were interested for short periods of time, a few poems at a time. They liked looking at the illustrations. Several of the poems were over their heads.

Adult Reader Reaction: I liked it and thought it was a nice change of pace from stories. I don’t see many kids sitting through much of this book at a time, but a little bit is fun.

Pros: The poems are short and can be read a few at a time.

Cons: Some of the poems are a light look at adult issues such as marriage, so the reader may understand them, while the kids don’t. But they are all perfectly safe for family reading.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow. It is a nice change of pace from long stories, but not so fun that I want to read it again and again.

Educational Themes: This is mainly just fun. It is a nice introduction to poetry and the variant forms (and subjects) in the genre.

Literary Categories: Fiction - poetry; picture book
