Summary: Bright pictures and sturdy pages help kids learn English or Spanish words for the things that are part of everyday life: colors, shapes, numbers, their clothes, parts of their house, even their bath time things. This is an oversized board book that offers basic Spanish vocabulary.
Type of Reading: family reading, playtime reading, read aloud book,
Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 8; read yourself: 7 to 9
Interest Level: 2 to 5
Reading Level: 3
Age of Child: Read with 5-year-old girl.
Young Reader Reaction: We picked this book. It isn't a story you read cover to cover, so my daughter would pick a page, point to something and then we'd pronounce the Spanish word.
Adult Reader Reaction: This is an excellent toddler book. The pictures are bright and kids will love pointing to the objects. The format allows for English speakers to learn Spanish, and vice versa.
Pros: Sturdy pages and bright colors engage kids in learning new vocabulary. All of the things they see in the book are things they see every day.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. If you are introducing Spanish (or English) at home, this is an excellent book. The board-book pages will take lots of wear and tear, and you will see all of the things in the book in the world around you.
Educational Themes: This is a book for learning language. Although billed as a book for children 4 to 8, you can use this with toddlers, too. This has great potential as an ESL book for teachers working with families.
