Summary: Sticks and Steps together help kids visualize how multiplication works. Draw them or use popsicle sticks to give kids a hands-on opportunity to practice math. This is a guided workbook for teaching multiplication and division.
Type of Reading: playtime reading, interactive reading
Recommended Age: read together: 8 to 12; read yourself: 10 to 13
Interest Level: 9 to 12
Age of Child: Read with and by a 10-year-old girl.
Young Reader Reaction: Our daughter liked the first part of the book, but started getting frustrated with the multi-digit multiplication. We lost her at division.
Adult Reader Reaction: This is a very helpful book, and I wish (a) we had had it much sooner; and (b) could use it to allow our daughter to show her work. This is not a book you complete in a few sittings, so it is best to start before they start studying multiplying and dividing at school.
Pros: You'll find lots of help and cheer-leading as you use this book to learn multiplication and division.
Cons: This book is exceptional, but it will not work in school systems or classrooms where teachers expect students to use a certain "method" in doing and showing their work. That added to the frustration my daughter felt.
Borrow or Buy: Buy. This is an exceptional tool for reinforcing math concepts. It definitely beats flashcards!
