Type of Reading: bedtime story, family reading, playtime reading, read aloud book, learning to read
Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 8; read yourself: 5 to 9
Interest Level: 4 to 8
Reading Level: 3.3
Young Reader Reaction: Review pending.
Adult Reader Reaction: I thought this book was very well written. It describes the difficult journey down the Grand Canyon in language children can understand. Also, the pictures were vibrant and helped explain the mule train’s
surroundings. The best part of the book was that as the mule were winding downward, the pages had to be read vertically instead of horizontally — great idea!!!
Pros: This is a well crafted, informative, and creative book. At the end of the book, the author talks about his visit into the Grand Canyon. It is a great addition that gives parents a teaching opportunity.
Cons: My only complaint is that one page says, “They pass the bones of a mule that had fallen from the trail.” To me, that’s just scary and not necessary to the story.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a great book, but really doesn’t apply to my life. It would be wonderful for an elementary school teacher in that area or kids studying life in the southwestern United States.
Educational Themes: This is a great book for young kids to learn about the Grand Canyon. It also teaches determination, as the mule train has never been canceled because of weather.
Notes: Flesch Kincaid reading level 3.3 The Reading Tub, Inc. asked the publisher for a donation for this title. The request was for the purpose of reviewing the book. It will be given to a reader in need.
