MOUSE'S FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Author: Lauren Thompson

Illustrator: Buket Erdogan

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Simon & Schuster's Children's,

Material: hard cover

Summary: Mouse goes to school, and we explore with him all the sights and sounds of the day. This is a simple book for describing school for a young child.

Type of Reading: playtime reading, read aloud book

Recommended Age: read together: 3 to 6; read yourself: 5 to 7

Interest Level: 3 to 6

Reading Level: 1.5

Age of Child: Started reading 22 month-old child.

Young Reader Reaction: S/He liked the story at first, but after about a dozen readings, s/he was done with it. Now, if we try to read it, we're told to put it back on the shelf.

Adult Reader Reaction: An easy, short way to explain what kids see at school. There are few words, so it's a great opportunity for engaging a toddler in identifying objects, activities, colors.

Pros: The story is short and speaks ONLY to the activities and items of school. For a child anxious about school, it's a great way to introduce the idea and hopefully ward off some of the anxiety.

Cons: It's very limiting. It's really only good for one part of the year, and once you've read it a few times, it's lost its utility.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow; but only if you have a young child JUST entering school who seems anxious about what's going to happen.

Educational Themes: With the focus on the objects and activities of school, it's a great way to introduce the elements of a classroom. The illustrations allow for teaching color, objects, and counting.
