Summary: A woman from China gives up her child so a woman in the United States can raise her and have a child. The words in the book are about one giving her life and the other teaching her to live. It shows that one gave her emotions but the other is there to comfort. It explains how one found a home she could not provide while the other prayed for a child and was not denied. This is a book to celebrate and explain adoption for children.

Type of Reading: bedtime story, playtime reading, read aloud book

Recommended Age: read together: 4 to 8; read yourself: 7 to 10

Interest Level: 4 to 10

Reading Level: 3

Age of Child: Read with a 5-year-old girl.

Young Reader Reaction: At first my daughter did not understand the story. As the book went on, she got the idea that the one mother had given up the daughter so the other mother could raise her in a better place. She liked it but it is not a book she would sit and read again and again.

Adult Reader Reaction: Since my daughter was unsure about the story, I did read it with her twice. I thought this was a good book for sharing the emotions of adoption and showing both perspectives.

Pros: This is a great story for helping kids understand what adoption means and for sharing all of the emotions involved.

Cons: Be sure to explain what the book is about before reading it with a child.

Borrow or Buy: Buy. This is a beautiful book for adoptive families. Adopted children will find the book reassuring and comforting. It is an excellent selection for a library, too.

If You Liked This Book, Try: I LOVE YOU LIKE CRAZY CAKES   I WISHED FOR YOU; AN ADOPTION STORY   ADOPTION IS FOR ALWAYS

Educational Themes: This is a book for adoptive families, but it can help all children understand adoption. Use it to talk about unconditional love, families, acceptance, and a mother's love.

Notes: A Reading Tub volunteer submitted this review. S/He borrowed the book from the local library.
