MERRY CHRISTMAS (A Sparkle 'N' Shimmer Book)

Author: Michelle Knudsen

Illustrator: Kathi Couri

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Little Simon/Simon & Schuster,

Material: board book

Summary: The family is busy preparing for Christmas, and there is plenty for everyone to do. Every one (and all the pets) share the excitement of preparing for Christmas Day.

Type of Reading: playtime reading, read aloud book

Recommended Age: read together: 0 to 4; read yourself: 6 to 8

Interest Level: 1 to 4

Age of Child: Read with child 12 months old; read again with child nearly 2 years old.

Young Reader Reaction: At one year, the textures were enough. At nearly 2 years, the book is a MUST READ every night.

Adult Reader Reaction: The story is mundane and plainly describes the things associated with Christmas (wrapping gifts, decorating the tree, drinking hot cocoa).

Pros: It entertains our toddler, who LOVES the routine of it and has begun repeating some of the activities.

Cons: S/He may like reading it a lot, but it isn't a book that stands up to lots of parental entertainment. Even hiding it hasn't worked.

Borrow or Buy: Skip it if you can. There are plenty of toddler-oriented holiday books with real stories.

If You Liked This Book, Try: COLORS; A Razzle Dazzle Book   LITTLE KANGAROO, I LOVE YOU! (A Read-and-Squeeze Sweet Talkin' Book)   ALBERT's THANKSGIVING

Educational Themes: The simple descriptions serve well to engage youngsters (who don't understand all the hoopla yet) in the excitement of preparing for Christmas.
